Introduction
Welcome back to another post in our series on downgrade options! In this article, we'll cover the downgrade options available for Capital One credit cards and important details to keep in mind before making any changes.
Downgrade Rules for Capital One Credit Cards
- Same Family: Generally, you can only product change a Capital One card within the same card family or brand. However, there are some exceptions where you can downgrade to specific cards (detailed below).
- Personal to Business: You can only downgrade personal cards to personal cards and business cards to business cards.
- Rewards: You won't lose any rewards when you downgrade a Capital One credit card.
- Credit Score: Downgrading a credit card will not impact your credit score.
- Annual Fee Refund: Capital One handles annual fee refunds differently. You can get a refund if you close the card within 30 days of when the fee was charged. However, if you downgrade the card, they won’t refund the fee, even within 30 days. Interestingly, Capital One often offers an annual fee waiver if you agree to keep the card open and have a perfect payment history, so it’s worth asking for a waiver first.
- Timing: To avoid paying an annual fee, you should downgrade your card at least 60 days before the fee is billed.
- Availability: Downgrades are not guaranteed and can be targeted for specific accounts. Some cardholders may not be eligible to downgrade their Capital One credit cards.
